On Thursday, August 8th, 2019, Amoud University opened its doors to students who have just completed secondary school and have obtained their Secondary School Certificates from all over Somaliland and beyond for the enrollment of the new intake for Freshman Department for the New Academic year September 2019/July 2020.
According to Mr. Harun Ismail Warsame, the Dean, Freshman Department, registration is currently ongoing and is expected to go well up to the end of next month and terminate on Thursday, October 31st, 2019 when the registration exercise is going to be officially closed.
The Freshman Department prides itself as being the single most populous academic unit which hosts all freshman students for their first year programme. It is the gateway to Amoud University, the entry point to all courses offered in the undergraduate programmes.
Students typically are required to take one academic year at the freshman department, comprising two semesters. The first semester starts in September of the preceding year and ends in January of the following year followed by a break of one month in Frebruary for vocational holidays and then the academic year resumes with second semester starting March and ending in July of that same year.
Freshman Department always opens its doors earlier than the continuing undergraduate students and currently Teaching and learning has already commenced for the current students since Saturday, September 7th, 2019.
In their first semester the students will take five (5) courses including Freshman Arabic, Reading & Vocabulary I, Writing Skills I, General Biology/ World Geography and Pre-Calculus. Thereafter in the second semester students will undertake another five (5) courses namely Islamic Studies, Reading & Vocabulary II, Calculus I, General Physics and General Chemistry/ History. Amoud University evaluates students based on the cumulative Grade Point Average over that period of two semesters and minimum requirements for subject clusters to determine qualification for the faculty of choice at Sophomore (second year) of learning. The top students are then given priority to select a programme they wish to undertake and other programmes also compete freely for students intake based on their attractiveness and students interests. There are of course restrictions on the number of students that can be admitted into some particular porgramme due to constraints such as resources required for quality training to be achieved in the given fields of specialization especially for the schools of the College of Health Sciences.
Welcome to Amoud University, the oldest and most prestigious university in Somaliland!
