University of Massachusetts Amherst (commonly refered to as uMass) representatives Joseph B. Berger who is currently the Senior Associate Dean and Director, Center for International Education (CIE), College of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst, together with Mohamed Good, the Research Associate, College of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Hanni S. Thoma, Research Assistant College of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst arrived at Amoud University for a fact finding and needs assessment mission at Amoud University on Saturday October 9th, 2016. Accompanying this team was Mr. Mohamoud Farah Egal, Chairman of Amoud Foundation together with Ahmed Ismail a member of the Amoud Foundation team. Amoud Foundation has been a strategic partner for Amoud University since its inception, providing vital assistance towards the support of Al Hayat Teaching and Referral Hospital, consutruction of Borama-Amoud Road and in several different areas.
Amoud University officials led by Prof. Suleiman Ahmed Guleid, President Amoud University, Prof. Abdillahi A. Boqore, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Amoud University, Prof. Abdillahi A. Shirdon,Vice President for Administration and Finance, Amoud University, Mohamed Mohamoud Jamaa "Derie", Vice President for Public Relations and Community Outreach, Dr. Said Ahmed Walhad, the Principal Amoud University College of Health Sciences and Dr. Mohamed Musa Jibril, Dean School of Postgraduate Studies and Research, Amoud University received the guests in Borama Town at Rays Hotel and hosted them to a dinner, followed by short formal introductions. In attendance were other officials from Amoud University including Abdillahi Aare, Chief Registrar, Amoud University and several deans of various faculties drawn from both Main Campus Amoud University and Town campus, Amoud University.
On Sunday October 9th, 2016 the guests were then ushered into Amoud University on a tour of the main campus where they paid a courtesy call to various faculties, assessing the infrastructural facilities and equipment available while identifying gaps and areas that may need support or partnerships. There are six faculties located at the man campus including Faculty of Education, Faculty of Business and Public Administration, Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Faculty of Computing and ICT, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Agriculture and Environment. The guests were further shown other essential university services and assets such as the university main library and Al Hayat Teaching and Referal Hospital. At Al Hayat Hospital Dr. Mohamed Hassan Derie, the Head of Al Hayat Hospital received the delegation and took them on a quick tour of various units and departments including Ultra Sound department, X-ray department and Pathology deepartment which are manned by Dr. Farhan Roobleh Riresh, Dr. Osman and Mubarik Abdillahi resepectively.
The two universities, Amoud University and University of Massachusetts Amherst, are trying to work on a joint collaboration in terms of academic growth and development and mutually beneficial partnership. The visit by this delegation started on Saturday October 9th, 2016 and is scheduled to take about one week. In the itinerary, these guests are scheduled to visit Amoud University, Main Campus, Al Hayat Teaching and Referral Hospital, Amoud University School of Postgraduate Studies and Research(AUSPGSR) and Amoud University College of Health Sciences(AUCHS). Thereafter it is envisaged that the team shall hold discussions which could lead to mutually beneficial agreements between Amoud University and University of Massachusetts. Upon completion of these visits, the delegation is scheduled to meet Civil Society Groups and end the tour with a final meeting with other Somali/ Somaliland universities who have been invited to attend. The six-day tour is envisaged to end on Thursday October 13th, 2016.
