Introduction

Civil engineering plays a decisive role in the human civilization and it is the driving engine of modernization. In a developing country, civil engineering contributes to the economic development and improvement of the living standard of the people. Infrastructure developments are indicators of improved livelihood, socio-economic transformation and investment attractions and the contribution of civil engineering professional practices and careers are undeniable and crucial from the point of view of infrastructure development. Therefore, the civil engineering studies must have clear focus areas of engineering capacity building (ECB), curriculum and outcomes, which enable to achieve accelerated industrial development and sustainable achievements in improving the country's infrastructure facilities.
Civil Engineering is an important and learned profession, which is achieved through academic education at recognized institution. Competence can be developed and enriched by extended experience. It is a profession practiced in civil works development projects with direct and vital impact on the livelihood of the community.
Civil engineering plays a vital role in the overall development of the country. The planning, design and execution of infrastructures in the country are mainly the results of the Civil Engineers and their profession. Private and public buildings, industrial complexes for the manufacture of various items, dams for irrigation, water supply and generation of power, roads and airfields to facilitate the transportation of people and goods, municipal sewer systems, improving agriculture through water resource development and other areas of infrastructure are the products of the civil engineer. The civil engineering practices cause dramatic and rapid changes in the livelihood of the society and the built up environment and have impact on the economic growth of the country. However, Civil Engineers work under difficult working environment with less incentive as compared to other professionals, and this become an obstacle in their desire and effort to change and improve living conditions through the delivery of the expected level of services.

 
Civil Engineer
In order to understand civil engineering and the civil engineer, one has to remember the great civilizations such as the Romans, Egyptians and Maya, all which were able to develop building techniques and systems to support life. Today, civilization relies more than ever on teams of inventive people to design, build and maintain the sophisticated environment that surrounds us.
Infrastructure is the thing such as roads and harbors, railways and airports, hospitals, sports stadiums and schools, access to drinking water and shelter from the weather that supports our daily life.
Infrastructure adds to our quality of life, and because it works, we take it for granted. People only realize its value when parts of it fail and destructed mainly because of man-made and natural calamities or are taken away. Civil Engineers overcome the challenges of creating and maintaining our infrastructure for us and for future generations in amazing ways.
Civil Engineers play great leadership and professional role in the infrastructure and environmental arena and in protecting safety, health and welfare of human beings, animals and nations. People believe that our society would not function without the work of civil engineers. Every morning we might turn on the tap, boil a kettle, use the bathroom, walk along a road, cross a bridge or take a train. Without civil engineering, we would not be able to do any of these. We can imagine what life would like in the absence of civil engineering.

Executive Summary
There are eleven categories of study, namely, General Sciences and engineering, structural engineering, Surveying engineering, geology, Construction management, water resources, road and highway engineering, design project and B.Sc. Thesis. These categories of study reflect the objectives of the study programme. In order to implement these objectives such that the desired outcomes are arrived at, modules are designed under the categories of study.
The modules include applied mathematics, engineering mechanics, general engineering skills, engineering computer sciences, strength of materials, structures, reinforced concrete, bridge design, structural design, foundation, soil mechanics, surveying, social sciences, communication, water supply, hydrology, hydraulics, hydraulic structures, highway engineering, building & materials, project implementation, elective courses, internship, design project and B.Sc. Thesis.
Fifty students are admitted to the Department annually.
There are twelve staff members including expatriate and local staffs. The staff profile ranges from an Assistant Professor to a technical assistant.
A cost sharing system is recently introduced. The tuition fees amounts to 466 dollar per year.
The Target groups of this Programme are students who completed their high school with satisfactory performance.
Students are all full-time and are expected to finish eight semesters of work.

Objectives of the B.Sc. Degree.
The prospective students are required to develop skills, academic values and professionalism oriented towards solving civil engineering problems. The students are expected to develop entrepreneurial skills, effective communication skills, team work, and management skills in addition to abilities in various areas of civil engineering.
The B.Sc. Degree in Civil Engineering enables the students
(1)    To have knowledge of the historical context, the state-of-the-art, and emerging issues in the field of civil engineering and its role in contemporary society;
(2)    Demonstrate critical reasoning and requisite quantitative skills to identify, formulate, and resolve civil engineering problems, and to create designs that reflect economic, environmental, and social sensitivities;
(3)    display a systems viewpoint, critical thinking, effective communication and interpersonal skills, a spirit of curiosity, and conduct reflecting a professional and ethical manner;
(4)    exhibit a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development, involvement in professional activity and public service, and achievement of professional licensure;
(5) Reflect a broad intellectual training for success in multidisciplinary professional practice, in civil engineering or diverse related careers, and toward achieving leadership roles in industry, government, and academia.

Specific abilities, skills and knowledge to be imparted to the students are listed hereunder:

1.    an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics through differential equations; probability and statistics; calculus-based physics; general chemistry; and engineering science in the context of civil engineering applications.
2.    an ability to design and conduct laboratory experiments, as well as to critically analyze and interpret data, in two or more recognized major civil engineering areas, such as structures, transportation, water resources, and environmental.
3.    an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, constructability, and sustainability.
4.    An ability to function in multidisciplinary teams.
5.    An ability to identify, formulates, and solves civil engineering problems in a minimum of four recognized major civil engineering areas.
6.    An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities of civil engineers in relation to public and private institutions and in the context of civil engineering infrastructure systems.
7.    An ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
8.    A broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
9.    Recognition of the need for professional licensure and life-long learning.
10.    Knowledge of contemporary issues.
11.    an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for civil engineering practice, and an understanding of professional practice issues such as project management and interactions between the development, design, and construction professions.


2. Aims of the Faculty of Engineering Technology
The major objectives of the Faculty of engineering Technology at Amoud University are:
•    To produce and train young engineers who are active and equipped with practical and theoretical knowledge.
•    To provide consultancy to governmental and non-government associations.
•     To take a great role for the recreation of the country.
•     To train others who are in constructional fields in the country.
•    Give short-term and long-term training in all the fields.
The faculty of engineering has given priority to academics, research and consultancy as outlined earlier. The faculty promotes a strong local and international cooperation in the fields of curriculum development, experience sharing, resource sharing (teaching and reference materials), and academic related information exchange, exchange of staffs, capacity building programme and research.
The Faculty plays the role of producing a Model Society through imparting core academic and professional values to its students. It encourages extra-curricular activities including sporting events, excursions, practical attachment programmes to the industry, and holding discussions on contemporary issues.
The Civil Engineering envisages fulfilling the main objectives of the Faculty of Engineering Technology. Hence, the Civil Engineering Department gives training for undergraduate students leading to a B.Sc. The educational objectives and academic outcomes reflect the main objectives of the Faculty.
There is a strong link between the Civil Engineering and the other departments in that they strive to fulfill the vision and mission of the University at large. The departments have the strategy of working together to implement the industrial-led economic development strategy of the country and hence make the economy of the country highly competitive in the construction and production spheres.
3. Other Objectives
The Faculty of Engineering is fully accredited in the Country. The department is also fully recognized by the Amoud University. It has no legal constraints. The degree programme is considered as a milestone in the expansion of University Education in the country and is a key to solving the shortage of skilled human labor in the field of Civil Engineering.

As we all know engineering department of different fields specifically civil engineering department is based on scientific and mathematical operations therefore, we need highly qualified students.

Basic principle of the curriculum

The faculty of engineering selected new approach to engineering field and will promote:
1.    The concept of engineering promotion of building construction methods specifically the rehabilitation period.
2.    To restore the establishment if technical schools in Somaliland.
3.    Ensuring the building codes of the country.

Professional Profile - Civil Engineering Practices
Definition
Civil Engineering can be defined as a great art, on which the wealth and well-being of the whole of society depends. Its essential feature, as distinct from engineering the arts, is the exercise of imagination to fashion the products, processes and people needed to create a sustainable physical and natural built environment. It requires a broad understanding of scientific principles, knowledge of materials and the art of analysis and synthesis. It also requires research, team working, and leadership and business skills. Civil engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the environment in which we live.

Professional Practice
The practice of the civil engineering at professional level can be classified into four categories. These are:
(a)    Practice before construction: - This professional category includes project planning and management, consultation of infrastructure design, checking and revision of design works, feasibility studies, site investigations, and design.
(b)    Practice during construction: - This professional practice includes construction project planning and management, contract administration, construction supervision, consultation of construction works, consultation of design revision and contracting construction projects.
(c)    Practice after construction::- The professional practice after construction mainly focus on the planning and management of operation and maintenance activities of constructed infrastructures, facilities and public services.
(d)    Teaching and Research: - This professional practice engages the practitioners of CE in teaching and research careers in private and public universities.
Today's world is fundamentally challenging the way civil engineering is practiced. Complexity arises in every aspect of projects, from pre-project planning with varied stakeholders to building with minimum environmental and community disturbance. Addressing this increased complexity will require understanding and solving problems at the boundaries of traditional disciplines. At the same time, Civil Engineering academic programs need to provide adequate formal academic preparation for the practice of civil engineering at a professional level in the 21st century.

The vision of the faculty of engineering is to an excellent of engineering education with holistic approach to technical knowledge, research and training.

Philosophy

The philosophy of faculty of engineering entails training of civil engineers, whether they are women or men the concept of producing present and future engineers who can participate actively the recreation of the country.
We encourage our students to acquire practical skills and theory in the concerned fields of various engineering fields and also to be solving problems in the constructional areas specifically, roads construction, buildings, bridges and water supply areas.
 

Concept
Description of the Concept
1. Course Structure
The study programs have a total duration of 8 semesters. Each semester carries a total of 7 courses the total credit hours is 21.
The 1st semester is devoted mainly to ‘orientation studies’, i.e., courses of which most are common amongst beginning engineering students. The period 2nd to 4th semester is dedicated to ‘basic studies’, i.e., the theoretical foundations and more advanced concepts of engineering. At the end of the each semester, there is a ‘holistic examination’, in which the ability of the student to address more complex problems (drawing upon knowledge and skills obtained in the different courses of the ‘basic studies’), to develop pathways to their solution and to develop more complex solution strategies is examined. The internship is in the end of 7th semester; it has duration of a one month. At the end of the internship, the student needs to present her/his academic and professional achievements obtained during the internship. The emphasis of the 8th semester is on the production of the bachelor thesis. However, there could be few thought courses, elective or compulsory.

Graduation Requirements:

1.    Total Credit Hour of 156.
2.    No “F” grade in any of the courses
3.    Final Semester CGPA ≥ 2.00 and Major courses ≥ 2.50
4.    He/she must also pass Amoud Comprehensive Exam (ACE) for his/her major courses.
